There have been plenty of stories about people being followed or stalked when a stranger drops an Apple AirTag on them, but one Texas man used its tracking features to recover what was his. However, it eventually took a deadly turn.
According to a report from KHOU, a man used an AirTag to track down his stolen truck after a thief swiped it in the middle of the day.
The San Antonio Police Department says the thief was unaware he was being tracked before the owner of the vehicle eventually found him 20 miles from where it was stolen. That’s when the owner of the truck allegedly open-fired and killed the car thief.
Police found “several bullet casings and two cars with their windows shot out” at the scene. However, whether the owner of the truck is charged with the fatal shooting remains to be seen.
While the AirTag helped the man locate his truck, Officer Nick Soliz urged people to take proper measures if their car is stolen and not to take things into their own hands.
“If you are to get your vehicle stolen, please do not take matters into your own hands like this,” Soliz said. “It’s never safe as you can see by this incident.”
And while you shouldn’t take matters into your own hands, you also shouldn’t go around stealing vehicles.
