Up until this week, New York Mets slugger Tim Tebow had yet to really give his thoughts on Vince McMahon’s XFL 2.0 since it was officially announced a few weeks back. Right now Timmy is on a little promotional tour for the Purina Pro Plan’s $1 million Westminster Kennel Club Dog Show Bracket Challenge, so he’s been making the media rounds and has been finally forced to answer some XFL questions.
Remember, when this league was announced, Twitter exploded with possibilities of who could play in the league. Johnny Manziel was the obvious #1 choice, but it looks like he’s out with Vince’s no criminal record rule. Then people started turning to Tebow, who’s currently gearing up Spring Training, as another option to be the face of the XFL.
After dodging questions, we finally have an answer. Here’s what he said to Sports Illustrated about his potential chances of joining the XFL in 2020.
SI.com: When Vince McMahon announced the return of the XFL, everyone on Twitter wanted you and Johnny Manziel in the league. Were you aware of that?
Tebow: I’ve had a lot of people ask me about it, but I didn’t know those were the two things on Twitter. I can’t say I follow it that closely.
SI.com: On his conference call, McMahon said you’d be welcome in the league. Have you thought about seeing what happens when that league launches?
Tebow: That’s very nice of him, but 2020 is a long way from now. I’m focused on today, I’m focused on spring training and a lot of things before that. I’m not even close to thinking about that right now.
SI.com: So that’s not a “no” or a “yes.”
Tebow: What if it’s a “I have no idea?” That’s in 2020 and I’m super excited about baseball.
Yes, 2020 is a long way from now. Yes, he’s currently focusing on baseball. But we all know deep down Timmy still wants to man a huddle and play QB. We all remember how stubborn he was about that when he was still in the NFL. Who knows what can happen in the next 2 years?
I’m on record saying that Tebow will be an MLB outfielder for the Mets at some point. I still believe that. But I also think he can do both. He can bring back the era of two sport athletes. So it’s a good start that he came out and didn’t give a flat no.
