Could the San Francisco 49ers have had Tom Brady under center for the NFC Championship Game against the Detroit Lions?
According to a new ESPN report, the 49ers were considering a final run at Brady prior to the regular season.
In a report today, ESPN’s Nick Wagoner revealed that the 49ers were ready to attempt to get the future Hall of Fame quarterback to come out of retirement for a final Super Bowl run with his hometown team.
49ers head coach Kyle Shanahan reportedly sat down with Purdy to assure him he would be the starter if he was healthy and Brady was not interested in playing.

An ecstatic Purdy understood the logic, but the competitor in him also bubbled under the surface.
“That meant so much to me,” Purdy said. “I remember him saying, if we can get Tom Brady, we’re going to try to get him. And I was like, ‘Yeah, he’s the GOAT. I get it.’ But something deep down inside me was sort of like, ‘Dude, I just showed you that I can play well in this system. And we were one game away from the Super Bowl.’
“More than anything, I was like, ‘OK, now let’s go.'”
If this is all true, how did ESPN keep the news so quiet? You would think that would be a story they would have plastered all over SportsCenter and that their talking heads would be screaming about the topic nonstop throughout the day on the plethora of debate shows.
But, for whatever reason, is was all kept quiet.
And in the end, it doesn’t matter. The 49ers are still one win away from reaching the Super Bowl with Brock Purdy at the helm, and their loaded roster lived up to expectations even without the GOAT.
