Alabama defensive back Caleb Downs has been named the Shaun Alexander Freshman of the Year. The Shaun Alexander Freshman Player of the Year Award is an honor given each year to the most outstanding freshman player in college football.

Previous winners of the award include Georgia’s Brock Bowers, Alabama’s Will Anderson Jr., UNC quarterback Drake Maye, and Clemson’s Trevor Lawrence.

“Caleb Downs’ talent is undeniable and when you watch him, he just jumps off the field,” Shaun Alexander said in a statement. “When I had the opportunity to learn about Caleb as a teammate and a person it was obvious that he was the type of player I would want to carry on the tradition of the Shaun Alexander Freshman Player of the Year Award.”

The Georgia native was also named the SEC Newcomer of the Year for 2023. He was also named to the Pro Football Focus, Sporting News, and the Associated Press All-American teams.

This season, Downs recorded 99 total tackles, 3.5 tackles for loss, two interceptions, one forced fumble and three pass breakups.
