Kevin Sumlin, co-offensive coordinator for the Maryland Terrapins, was arrested in Florida over the weekend during the team’s bye week.
According to a report from DBK News, Sumlin was arrested and charged with driving under the influence around 1:00 a.m. ET in Tampa. The 59-year-old refused a breathalyzer test which results in a one-year suspension of his driver’s license.
Sumlin’s charge carries a maximum sentence of six months in jail.
He pleaded not guilty and waived arraignment.
Maryland hired Sumlin as co-offensive coordinator in February.
Prior to joining Maryland as the associate head coach, co-offensive coordinator, and tight ends coach, Sumlin served as head coach of the Houston Cougars where he was a two-time Conference-USA Coach of the Year. He later took over at Texas A&M, earning SEC Coach of the Year honors in his first year leading the Aggies.
Most recently, Sumlin had a short stint with the Arizona Wildcats and, most recently, the Houston Gamblers of the revived USFL.
Throughout his head coaching career, Sumlin has an overall record of 98-70.
Neither Maryland nor Sumlin have commented on his arrest.
