Portland State was taken to the woodshed in Week One of the 2023 college football season, suffering an 81-7 loss to the Oregon Ducks at Autzen Stadium.

But for one Vikings player, it was more than just a game that was lost.

Portland State head coach Bruce Barnum recapped the team’s loss during a radio appearance on The Bald Faced Truth with John Canzano when he revealed that one player got his “ear ripped off” during the loss.

The ear was sewn back on, but the player also suffered a concussion.

“We’re fine. We had one guy get his ear ripped off. They sewed it back on and now they say he has a concussion, so he’s out, but I think he’s fine,” Barnum told Costanzo.

“Not the whole ear; a partial ear detachment. I think it was from when he got his helmet knocked off, so I think his ear didn’t come out of his helmet.”

The player who was injured was not named, but we’re guessing a quick look at the players without their helmets on would provide a clue.

Up next for the Vikings is another road game on Saturday, September 9, against the Wyoming Cowboys. Kickoff at War Memorial Stadium is set for 4:00 p.m. ET.

No. 13 Oregon, meanwhile, will travel to Lubbock to take on Texas Tech.
