Memphis Commit Mikey Williams Arrested On Felony Assault Charges

Mikey Williams, a four-star Memphis basketball commit and one of the top players in the 2023 recruiting class, was arrested in San Diego on Thursday on multiple felony assault charges.

According to NBC San Diego, the 18-year-old Williams was arrested on five felony counts of assault with a firearm.

Few details are available regarding the incident that led to Williams’ arrest, but he was released on $50,000 bail early Friday morning. The alleged incident took place in the Jamul suburb of San Diego, where Williams — one of the top NIL earners in high school basketball — purchased a home last summer.

“We are aware of the situation and are gathering more information,” the University of Memphis athletic department said in a statement.

There is no word on how Williams’ arrest could impact his commitment.

Williams was a star at San Ysidro High School after transferring from Lake Norman Christian School in North Carolina where he played his sophomore and junior years. During his senior campaign, Williams averaged 23.8 points, 9.2 assists, and 3.2 rebounds per game.
