Dak Prescott made some controversial comments following the Dallas Cowboys‘ loss to the San Francisco 49ers on Wild Card weekend which brought their season to an abrupt end.

After the game, Prescott made comments regarding fans throwing debris onto the field. Initially, Prescott was critical of the fans, before he was told they were actually throwing debris at the referees, who called an end to the game after his scramble down the middle of the field with no timeouts left as time expired.

“Credit to them then,” Prescott said. “Yeah, credit to them.”

Now, he is issuing an apology.

“I deeply regret the comments I made regarding the officials after the game on Sunday,” Prescott wrote in a statement on Twitter. “I was caught up in the emotion of a disappointing loss and my words were uncalled for and unfair. I hold the NFL Officials in the highest regard and have always respected their professionalism and the difficulty of their jobs. The safety of everyone who attends a game or participates on the field of a sporting event is a very serious matter.

“That was a mistake on my behalf, and I am sorry.”

It’s not a surprise that Prescott issued an apology, because he likely heard from the league office about the issue. And you never want to encourage fans to throw anything onto the field regardless of who the target is.

Prescott was also in the heat of the moment because the Cowboys impressive regular season came down in flames. But now, all he has all the time in the world for reflection and his thoughts.
