Some people take football way too seriously. Emily Mayfield, the wife of Cleveland Browns quarterback Baker Mayfield, is reminding us of that.
Mrs. Mayfield took to social media to share that the former No. 1 overall pick has been receiving death threats following the Browns’ Christmas Day loss to the Green Bay Packers. Mayfield threw for four interceptions in the game.
Baker Mayfield has been criticized for his performance throughout the year, but now things are going too far.
“It’s crazy how much negativity is amplified via social media,” Emily wrote on her Instagram story. “I’m still a believer that there’s more good people out there than bad, but WOW does social media make me think otherwise sometimes. Which plays into why I love to spread positivity. Our world needs more of it.
Whatever your opinion on #6 as a 🏈 player, if you’re sending him and his wife death threats, you are absolute gutter-spawn, the lowest of the low. You are the true down-and-outs of society if you think this is acceptable in any way. @bakermayfield @emilywmayfield6 #Browns pic.twitter.com/CUJzcTF1lo

“The death threats, lies being told about my husband, and blatant DISRESPECT never ceases to amaze me. For the record — I pray for those of you who even think those thoughts, let alone type them out. I hope you can find some happiness so you stop trying to steal it from others.”
This season, Mayfield has thrown for 2,825 yards, 15 touchdowns, and 11 interceptions.
And while fans may be critical of his performance and are wanting to see more from the 26-year-old quarterback, the Browns remain in the NFL playoff race. And, again, it’s always important to remember that this is just a game.
