Cam Newton is being forced to sit out the next five days due to a “misunderstanding” about protocols relating to COVID-19 testing away from NFL facilities.
According to the New England Patriots, Newton traveled for team-approved COVID testing over the weekend. All of the tests were returned negative, but because of the mix-up, he will have to sit out until Thursday before he is cleared to return to the team.
“On Saturday, Cam Newton traveled to a Club-approved medical appointment that required him to leave the New England area,” the statement read. “He received daily Covid tests, which were all negative. Due to a misunderstanding about tests conducted away from NFL facilities, and as required by the NFL-NFLPA protocols,
“Cam will be subject to the five-day entry cadence process before returning to the facility. Cam will continue participating virtually in team activities and return to the club facility on Thursday. August 26.”

With Newton sidelined, it will be interesting to see if Mac Jones makes any progress in taking over the starting quarterback job in what has been a tight race all preseason.
