Who will be the San Francisco 49ers starting quarterback for the 2021 regular season: veteran Jimmy Garoppolo or rookie Trey Lance?

While there is a lot to be determined, general manager John Lynch provided some information about the team’s quarterback competition as they prepare to start the preseason this weekend.

According to Lynch, Garoppolo continues to be the team’s starter, but the first-round pick Lance is making a case of his own for the top spot on the depth chart.

But ultimately, head coach Kyle Shanahan will have the final call.

“That’s up to Kyle. That’s up to our head coach,” Lynch said on the Murph & Mac show, via 49ersWebZone.com. “He makes the decisions on who’s playing and what not. But I think it’s Jimmy’s right now and Trey’s pushing. I think that’s where it’s at.

“He’s been awesome. He’s been everything we thought he would be and more. He was good from day one when he walked in here in the offseason, and I think a testament to what we thought he was and his work ethic.”

We will get our first extended look at Lance in the 49ers offense in the team’s preseason opener against the Kansas City Chiefs on Saturday night. Garoppolo will take the field for the first series, while Lance will finish out the first half.

Kickoff at Levi’s Stadium is set for 8:30 p.m. ET.
