Louis Nix III’s mother is sharing details about the former Notre Dame Fighting Irish star’s tragic death.
Nix was reported missing in Jacksonville, Florida in late-February and later found dead at the age of 29 after his car was recovered from the bottom of a pond.
According to Nix’s mother, Nix lost his life after going into the water.
Ben Becker of ActionNewsJax.com shared the details from Nix’s mother, who says it appears that her son’s death was an accident and that he may have been distracted by his phone.
“It appears to be [an] accident, something may have distracted him lost control and went into the pond,” his mother told Becker. “He surfaced from the water and on the grass. The window on the passenger side was down. The pond is deep so it took some days for him to surface.”

Nix’s girlfriend was the last person who spoke to the former defensive lineman before his death and she revealed he was driving with another man.
The Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office, meanwhile, has not said if the other person was a person of interest nor whether they believe Nix may have been impaired at the time of the accident.

Nix played at Notre Dame for four seasons from 2010-2013 where he was a standout defensive lineman and helped the Fighting Irish reach a national championship appearance before being drafted by the Houston Texans in the third round of the 2014 NFL Draft.
