Milwaukee Bucks superstar winger Giannis Antetokounmpo has officially won his second straight NBA MVP award, according to sources close to ESPN’s Adrian Wojnarowski.

Antetokounmpo joins Stephen Curry, LeBron James, Steve Nash, Tim Duncan, Michael Jordan, Larry Bird, Moses Malone, Wilt Chamberlain and Bill Russell as players to win back-to-back MVPs.

The official announcement for the award is set for September 18 at 2 p.m. E.T.

Additionally, Antetokounmpo joins Michael Jordan (1987-88 season) and Hakeem Olajuwon (1993-94 season) as the only NBA players to win the MVP and Defensive Player of the Year awards in the same season.

Although the Bucks fell short of their ultimate goal to win an NBA title this year, Antetokounmpo averaged 29.5 points, 13.6 rebounds and 5.6 assists during the team’s stellar season. Milwaukee finished the regular season with the NBA’s best record but lost in five games to the Miami Heat during the Eastern Conference semifinals.

Antetokounmpo also led the NBA in field goal percentage allowed at the rim (minimum 100 FGA defended) and field goal percentage allowed as the closest defender (minimum 500 FGA defended), according to Second Spectrum.

Antetokounmpo has a decision to make this offseason about either signing an extension with Milwaukee or entering the 2020-21 season in the final year of his contract. If Antetokounmpo elects not to sign an extension in the offseason, this would make the superstar winger available for free agency in 2021.
