Pro athletes have bottomless pockets and seemingly endless bank accounts. Their salaries make it so they’re on the same level as A-list celebrities, with opportunities to make connections with the top tier fashion houses and names in the world.
But there are five major league professional sports, and that means there are a lot of players. That’s a lot of Instagram to scroll through if you’re looking for style inspiration of any kind.
Here are 5 pro sports players from Sports Illustrated’s 50 Best Dressed Athletes in Sports whose personal style tops the charts on our radar.
1. LeBron James
The NBA funnels hapless sums of money into the bottomless pockets of professional basketball players, especially in the United States. All that money has to go to some use or let’s face it – it burns an even bigger hole in what’s already a giant pocket. Lots of players are known by the shoes they wear on the court, but their style off the court gets them noticed too.
What’s amazing is that the King has a lifetime deal with Nike. That lends itself to reason why he’s such an influential figure in men’s fashion. He likely will be for quite a while to come, considering that lifetime deal. His classic taste is different than many of his opponents, though, using a more neutral palette than them.
2. Henrik Lundqvist
There’s no shortage of hockey players. You could almost say they’re a specific breed of people and once they’ve gotten on the ice, they all grow a longer hairstyle and adopt what sounds uncomfortably like a Canadian accent. They might even be missing a few teeth. But hockey players, governed by the NHL, have some strict guidelines about what they can wear and how much their fashion choices can represent their individuality. Hint: it isn’t much.
So, if high end and classic style is your thing, this goalie is the man to watch. While he doesn’t make the boldest of choices unlike other pro athletes on this list or even within his own league, Lundqvist makes a statement with his timeless picks.
3. Odell Beckham Jr
He might not have been around as long as some of the other athletes we’ve mentioned, but Odell Beckham Jr. is reportedly the style icon “the NFL needs” according to CNN Style. Fondly known to fans (and otherwise) as OBJ, the NFL player is what seems like the face of the next generation of star NFL players. He’s only 26, but OBJ is getting looks off the field for his fashion choices.
As more of an influencer than some of his older professional NFL player counterparts, OBJ has an affinity for affecting the masses and that means reaching a wider audience. Meaning his fashion choices trickle down to fans.
4. Tom Brady
The Greatest Quarterback of All Time happens to be a man of style and taste, too. Most remember Tom Brady’s appearance in Ugg ads, but at this point, the 38-year-old quarterback of the New England Patriots has a covetable wardrobe suitable for the red carpet appearances he regularly makes with both his wife, Supermodel Gisele Bundchen, and his team.
5. Chris Bosh
This NBA player is a self-proclaimed lover of fashion. Apparently, he’d been enthralled with the fashion world, the glitz and glamour of success there is exciting to pretty much anyone. He joined the NBA knowing that it’s a league where players need to bring their A-Game, both on and off the court. So, with that in mind, he went ahead and started working on his own style that seems to morph all the time. It’s based on different influences from different decades which Bosh effortlessly uses to layer his looks.
