Brooks Koepka Weight Loss Controversy Is Good For Golf

If you believe Brandel Chamblee, the reason Brooks Koepka was down 24 pounds in March is because of a vanity photoshoot that is not-so-quietly a reference to the upcoming ESPN Body issue that Koepka just might have a spot in. Folks, we have ourselves a Masters week story to keep your eyes on the next couple of days – at least.

Let’s say Koepka, who has won the last two U.S. Opens and the 2018 PGA Tour Championship, goes out and struggles during the first two rounds the golf media is going to suddenly hammer Brooks with questions about losing the weight and why he did it. Koepka has already admitted that the weight loss has cost him 10-12 yards off the tee and his feel isn’t there. And now we have a talking head in Brandel feeling empowered with a story he can hammer on a weekly basis.

Here’s what Brandel had to say Tuesday night:

“We know what he did at the end of the last year.”

“You could extrapolate what he did at the end of last year to what he was likely to do here at Augusta National if everything were the same.”

But everything is not the same for Koepka, and Chamblee made that point very clear.

“For him to change his body, and his body chemistry, for vanity reasons, for a vanity shoot, is the most reckless self-sabotage that I have ever seen of an athlete in his prime.”

You might also want to blame the Maldives vacation with girlfriend Jena Sims, Paulina Gretzky and Dustin Johnson.

Koepka had a rough end to March — Cut, T-56, T-56 — after starting the month with a T-2 at the Honda Classic where he was strong on Sunday with a 66. If you believe what Brooks said this week, he hasn’t seen the gym since mid-March. He missed the 2018 Masters with a wrist injury and finished a career best T-11 at the 2017 Masters.

I’ll leave you with this: did Brooks Koepka curse himself by saying yes to the ESPN Body Issue and that trip with Paulina and Dustin where we got the thong photo? Was it career suicide?

I’m going to tune in.

When Brooks Koepka spoke to the media ahead of #TheMasters, he said he's been out of the gym since The Players. After he lost a significant amount of weight, he's saving his strength for this weekend at Augusta National.

How extreme was the dieting for Brooks Koepka? It sounds like he needs to hit a few draft beers to get the body back in order.

Brooks Koepka went on an 1800 calorie per day diet earlier this year to lose weight but admits he may have overdone it. "You're not going to be in the best physical shape at that point." Sounds like he's still not quite back to 100 percent.

Sounds like a guy I know who has been ketoing like crazy:

Brooks Koepka said he lost 24 pounds. He's now trying to regain some energy ahead of #TheMasters, as he eyes his third major victory in four starts.https://t.co/nVhfI1j0NS pic.twitter.com/Te6Cmgvvmh
