The Las Vegas Aviators opened their new Las Vegas Ballpark Tuesday and the big news besides the beautiful new ballpark is that a Triple-A ump was a complete jerkoff towards Finn the Bat Dog during the game. The ump was caught picking up a bat and throwing it towards the Aviators dugout, but it’s Finn’s job to retrieve the bats and bring them to the dugout.
Finn, a black lab, isn’t some rookie working his first day on the job. He’s a retrieving machine who lives to taste that pine tar wrapped around a fine piece of maple. Of course Finn did what any good boy would do and he tracked that maple and brought it right back to his owner.
Finn didn’t release a statement on the umpire’s action. Neither did his owner/trainer Fred. They’ll be getting all sorts of support from animal lovers who see this as a travesty. The ump clearly knew there would be a bat-retrieving dog on the field and went out of his way to disrespect Finn. I expect the Pacific Coast League, or whatever they’re calling it these days, to issue a statement that this will never happen again and that Finn will be shown much more respect by this ump going forward.
