If the Emily Wilkinson-Baker Mayfield wedding site is correct, these two are 16 days out from getting married in Malibu and one of them is out here in a war of words with Texas Longhorns quarterback Sam Ehlinger, who reportedly said Texas IS BACK and that triggered Mayfield on an Oklahoma radio station. Mayfield made it very clear during the interview that he doesn’t like Ehlinger and the feeling is mutual.
I mean, listen, normally I’d be terrified of a Cleveland Browns quarterback trading words with a college quarterback, but Baker Mayfield is still riding that emotional high of having Cleveland by the balls and will have Browns fans lining up to take a bullet for him as long as he remains their savior. Bake fighting with a college QB doesn’t bother Cleveland fans one bit and probably excites them a bunch because it shows Baker is ride or die with teams that take a chance on him.
Let’s go to the tape. “He couldn’t beat Lake Travis, so I don’t really care about his opinion on winning….Sam can stay down there in Texas….He doesn’t like me, and I hope he knows I don’t like him either.”:
.@bakermayfield made it clear that Texas is NOT back. And, he had some thoughts on the Longhorns' starting QB, Sam Ehlinger, with @TedLehman11 and @Tyler_McComas. #Sooners pic.twitter.com/7BZ9wS5Vjw

Sam Ehlinger has separate beefs w/ 2 of the greatest OU QBs ever, Kyler Murray & Baker Mayfield. Sam is gaining a lot of street cred from #Texas fans for that. If he starts a twitter beef w/ Jalen Hurts then we’ll know it’s not personal, he just dislikes OU QBs. #HookEm #Horns https://t.co/yShcubhakl

Of course the old white hair NFL guys will whine about Baker speaking out on Ehlinger and say it’s just another childish thing this guy has done and that he can’t let a grudge go. These are the white hairs that only have passion in their bodies for St. Elmo’s shrimp cocktail a couple times a year and free drinks at Super Bowl parties. These white hairs don’t have college or high school rivalries running through their blood.
Baker’s going to win a bunch of games in Cleveland, hold grudges against guys like Andy Dalton (until he’s ultimately replaced) and Roethlisberger and other guys for a long time. You guys know my theory is that the NFL is better when the guys aren’t programmed robots. The evolution of the NFL requires characters and when we lose guys like Gronk it’s time for someone else to step up and keep things interesting.
So nothing but respect for Grudge Baker. I wouldn’t even mind if he calls out a couple guys at his wedding reception. Hell, maybe there will be a brawl at the reception over a Texas-Oklahoma war of words. I can only hope…that someone records it.
This is the rivalry the NFL and NCAA need this season:
