Your hero John Daly is playing in the PGA Championship this week thanks to the use of a cart to get him around Bethpage, the monster public course on Long Island that plays 7,459 yards in good weather. Add in some nautical weather as is expected Friday and there’s no way Daly is walking that course thanks to arthritis. The 1991 PGA Champion is good for TV so the PGA gave him the cart exemption.
Of course the subject came up today when Tiger sat down with the New York media.
Rare shade from Tiger:
“As far as JD taking a cart, well,” he paused. “I walked with a broken leg, so.”
Tiger’s referring to the 2008 U.S. Open that he won — on one leg. Stevie Williams still calls it one of Tiger’s greatest accomplishments. That was where Tiger had to play an 18-hole playoff against Rocco Mediate that didn’t settle the tournament. The two would go to a sudden-death playoff 19th hole where Tiger finally outlasted Rocco.

John Daly counters:
“My knee is screwed,” Daly said. “I had the meniscus cut out. I have osteoarthritis so bad. … I can walk up a hill. I just can’t walk down one.”
Look, it’s not like Big John’s winning the PGA this week. This is like having Jack Nicklaus as the honorary Masters grand marshall. You roll Big John out there, let the fans cheer and jeer him, it makes headlines and everyone makes money. It’s not like tickets are being snapped up at a rapid pace here. The PGA needs this buzz. I think Tiger’s just busting John’s balls, but in a way he doesn’t want to see this become some normal thing out of the PGA.
PGA Championship at Bethpage this week has some of the lowest secondary ticket prices in recent major history. Surprising for largest media market coming off Tiger Masters win. You can buy a grounds pass for the entire week (face: $350) for $150.
