Did you watch that heavyweight title fight last night on Showtime?
Uh, it’s time to start paying attention to heavyweight boxing, fellas. Deontay Wilder took a step towards a possible Anthony Joshua mega-fight by knocking out Luis Ortiz, the Cuban who is known for escaping his captors in Mexico and making his way to the U.S. border. Wilder was pretty much saved by the bell in the 7th and came back to destroy Ortiz in the 10th, finishing off King Kong with a vicious uppercut after several blows that had Ortiz badly hurt.
The fight started slow and the Brooklyn crowd rained boos on both fighters, but once things got heated it was LIT AF. Wilder throws wild rights and doesn’t mind telling you those wild punches are to entertain your ass. I love that he just comes out and says he’s there to entertain the viewer. And it cost him in the 7th. He was one punch from being knocked out cold, but the champ held on to the bell, regrouped and got his head right.
Now comes a March 31 Anthony Joshua fight with a guy out of New Zealand. The winner is expected to get Wilder and keep the heavyweight division momentum rolling on.
Numbers from:
En route to his 7th successful title defense, Deontay Wilder improves to 40-0 (39 KO) with his 10th-round TKO of Luis Ortiz, retaining the WBC Heavyweight title. Wilder's 39 knockouts in his first 40 fights are the most among any heavyweight champion in history. pic.twitter.com/36PYvxJPN6
