New York Giants running back Cam Skattebo is targeting a Week 1 return after suffering a broken right fibula and dislocated right ankle last season – and he’s not shy about his expectations.
Speaking at a team town hall event at the Beacon Theatre in New York City on Monday, the 24-year-old addressed fans directly about his recovery.
“Obviously there’s ups and downs in the injury process and coming back and rehabbing, but the mental battle has been the hardest part: making sure that I trust it fully. I’m a little ways out. Not too far, but I’ll be ready to go. Week 1, I’ll be ready to go.”
The Giants open the 2026 season on Sunday night against the Dallas Cowboys – a prime-time stage that Skattebo clearly has circled on his calendar.
Selected in the fourth round of the 2025 draft out of Arizona State, Skattebo won over Giants fans quickly with his physical running style and an outgoing personality that translated both on and off the field. His rookie year was cut short after needing season-ending surgery following the Week 8 game against the Philadelphia Eagles.
He’s not satisfied with what he put together before going down, either.
“I do not consider that successful for me. I had 400 yards on 100 carries. When I play 17-plus games this year, it’s going to be 300 carries for over 2,000 yards.”
In the eight games he did play, Skattebo rushed for 410 yards and five touchdowns – a respectable debut by most standards, though clearly not by his own. A 2,000-yard season would rank among the best single-season rushing totals in NFL history, so the bar he’s setting for himself is high. Whether the Giants’ offensive line can support that kind of workload is another question entirely – but Skattebo, at least, sounds like he’ll be ready to find out.
