This year, running backs in football are doing great! Saquon Barkley and Derrick Henry, both super fast and strong, moved to new teams that have a real shot at winning the Super Bowl. Henry is scoring lots of touchdowns, and Barkley might even break a big record for running yards.
The Detroit Lions are also having a fantastic season thanks to their strong running game.
Under Ben Johnson’s guidance, the Lions have crafted a unique strategy that combines power and speed with players like David Montgomery and Jahmyr Gibbs. This approach has led them to an impressive 11-1 record. Meanwhile, the NFL has been focusing more on passing plays lately. But some teams still show that running can make a comeback! The San Francisco 49ers, though, remind us that betting too much on one star runner can be risky.
Christian McCaffrey, a top player for the 49ers, got hurt in a big game against the Buffalo Bills. He injured his knee, which means he can’t play for the rest of the season. Without him, the team struggled in the snowy game conditions in New York.
Trey Wingo pointed out that McCaffrey has missed nearly half of the 49ers’ games since 2020. Despite this setback, his salary remains high at $19 million annually. Even with running backs making a comeback, their market value isn’t expected to change much because of these injury risks.
Running backs often face tough challenges. Unlike quarterbacks who can play for many years, running backs usually don’t last as long due to the physical toll of the game. McCaffrey has proven himself as one of the best but injuries keep threatening his career.
