Arthur Smith has done a pretty good job with the Pittsburgh Steelers’ offense, even though some people didn’t expect it. He used to be the head coach for the Atlanta Falcons, but things didn’t go so well there. Now, he’s back to doing what he does best: calling plays that focus on running the ball. He learned a lot from his time with the Tennessee Titans, and it’s paying off in Pittsburgh under Mike Tomlin’s guidance.
Smith might be better off staying as a top offensive coordinator in the NFL.
Even though Smith turned down a chance to coach at North Carolina, rumors are swirling about him being linked to an NFL job with the Chicago Bears. Jay Glazer, an NFL insider, recently mentioned on FOX NFL Sunday that Smith could be a good fit for developing young quarterbacks like Caleb Williams. Glazer said, “I think the number one thing for them is they’re gonna need an offensive coach I think that can really sit there and teach and mold Caleb Williams over the years that can develop.”
Honestly, coaching the Bears might not be the dream job it seems. The team’s management situation is less than ideal, with many challenges facing any new head coach. Some folks think working for the Bears is almost like a curse, given their current state of affairs. But there’s a connection between Smith and Chicago due to his past experiences in Atlanta.
Sure, coaching someone like Caleb Williams could be tempting for many offensive coaches. Yet, some doubt whether Williams is truly special or just another hyped prospect. Comparisons have been drawn to players like Cam Newton and Jeff George, raising questions about his potential impact.
The talent is undeniable, but so is the arrogance. Smith himself isn’t exactly known for being humble or particularly likable. His background as the son of FedEx’s founder and his attitude during his time in Atlanta didn’t win him many fans. Maybe pairing him with Williams could somehow balance their personalities?
While Chicago has Williams, it’s still the Bears we’re talking about. For top candidates like Ben Johnson from the Detroit Lions, choosing the Bears over other opportunities might seem questionable. However, for Smith, this could be his best shot after his stint with Atlanta.
An unusual choice for sure, but sometimes crazy ideas work out surprisingly well.
