Jalen Hurts Dooms Nick Sirianni’s Eagles Partnership

The Philadelphia Eagles need to make some changes. They might have to consider moving on from their head coach, Nick Sirianni, but it’s not that simple. The team fell to 2-2 after losing to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers on Sunday. They also lost at home to the Atlanta Falcons in Week 2.

Something’s gotta give.

Last year, the Eagles were the best team in football halfway through the season. But as winter came, they started falling apart. The Buccaneers ended their season in the Wild Card Round. I think Sirianni benefited from having two great coordinators during their Super Bowl run, which left him exposed now.

Meanwhile, it seems like Jalen Hurts can’t stand Sirianni. His body language and comments at press conferences suggest a strained relationship. There are even rumors they’re not on speaking terms behind closed doors. This tension can’t continue if they want to build a winning team again.

After the loss to the Buccaneers, Hurts’ response to a question about his relationship with Sirianni was very telling.

“Jalen, you and Nick are obviously big voices on the team as the QB and the coach,” someone asked him. “As you enter the bye and you want to find an identity, do you two talk about maybe what you want the message to be to the team or how you want to handle [things] as you go into the second part of the year?”

Hurts’ reply was short and direct.

“We have our moments.”

One potential head-coaching candidate who could turn things around is Mike Vrabel.

Firing an underperforming head coach is easier than replacing an entire team. Howie Roseman has been praised for years, but has he built a roster that can succeed long-term? And we have to wonder if Jeffrey Lurie is contributing to a toxic culture that’s eating itself alive.

The Eagles aren’t afraid of hitting reset. They’ve done it many times before, especially after Andy Reid’s disastrous final season. In any given decade, they might be championship-caliber for three seasons, playoff contenders for four more, disappointing for three seasons, and abysmal for one.

It feels like they burn through their competitive cycles faster than any other NFL franchise. Since Reid left, coaches like Chip Kelly, Doug Pederson, and now Sirianni have all had success but couldn’t maintain it long-term. A new coaching staff might be what this team needs right now.

Hurts and Sirianni may have their issues, but there are bigger problems within this Eagles organization.
