In a surprising twist, the Carolina Panthers have decided to bench their young quarterback, Bryce Young. He’s only played 18 games and has won just 2 of them.
Young’s performance hasn’t been great.
Even though he’s not the only issue in Carolina, his stats aren’t good. He has thrown 11 touchdowns but also 13 interceptions in his 18 starts. Ouch!
The Panthers are now turning to Andy Dalton, a veteran quarterback, for the time being.
Two years ago, the Panthers made a big trade with the Chicago Bears to get Bryce Young. Let’s see how that trade worked out for both teams.
NFL Trade Grade: Regrading the blockbuster deal that landed Carolina their franchise QB
Here’s a recap of the trade:
Carolina’s 2025 second-round pick still is going to Chicago as the final piece of the Bryce Young trade, which went like this:
Bears received:
🏈 WR DJ Moore
🏈 2023 first-round pick (OT Darnell Wright)
🏈 2023 second-round pick (CB Tyrique Stevenson)
🏈 2024 first-round pick…— Adam Schefter (@AdamSchefter) September 16, 2024
Chicago got WR DJ Moore, a bunch of picks including one that became QB Caleb Williams. Carolina got the first overall pick in 2023 and used it on Bryce Young.
Chicago Bears trade grade: A
When the Bears made this trade, they probably didn’t think they’d get the first overall pick in 2024. But they did because the Panthers struggled badly with Young. They used that pick to draft Caleb Williams, who many believe is better than Young.
If given a choice now, I’m sure the Panthers would prefer Williams over Young. Plus, Chicago also got DJ Moore and other valuable picks. This trade is looking like an absolute steal for Chicago.
Carolina Panthers trade grade: F
The Panthers got a raw deal here.
They surely didn’t expect their team to be so bad that they’d hand over another first overall pick to Chicago. But that’s what happened. And Bryce Young hasn’t lived up to expectations at all.
At first glance, the trade seemed fair enough. But with how things have turned out, it looks like Carolina might be ready to move on from Young soon. If he leaves within a year or so, this could go down as one of the most lopsided trades ever!
