The Broncos have a famous coach and a new quarterback. They’re in the news because they didn’t do well in their first game. Sean Payton and Bo Nix need help to make the team better.
They need it badly.
The Broncos have spots open for players who do well during practice games. The offense needs players to help Nix so he doesn’t have to do too much. The defense needs players who can stop the other team and take the ball away.
Fans want to know which players will improve this year. Here are three players to watch out for.
3. Nik Bonitto
Nik Bonitto is a young linebacker who got noticed by getting eight sacks last season. He still needs to get better to play all game long.
He’s behind Baron Browning on the depth chart but should be on the field more often. Bonitto is not great at stopping the run but is excellent at getting into the backfield and causing problems for the other team.
If the Broncos can lead early in games, Bonitto will get more chances to play. He’s not good against the run but could become a top pass rusher if given more opportunities. He’s tough for offensive tackles to block when he focuses solely on attacking the quarterback.
This year is crucial for Bonitto to go from good to great as an edge rusher. A breakout season could also mean a big payday in free agency soon.
2. Troy Franklin
Rookie wide receivers picked in Round 4 usually don’t have high expectations, but Troy Franklin might surprise everyone. He’s currently behind Josh Reynolds as Denver’s No. 2 slot receiver but has potential to move up even though he didn’t play in Week 1.
Franklin knows Nix well from their time together at Oregon. Their chemistry could translate into success in Denver.
Franklin offers something different than Reynolds from the slot position. He’s good at catching deep passes while Reynolds is more of a possession receiver. Franklin’s size and speed make him a threat against single coverage.
It may take some time for Franklin to get more playing time but his potential will appeal to Payton as the season goes on. While young quarterbacks often need short, safe passes, Nix might benefit from having a deep threat like Franklin who can win contested catches downfield.
1. Greg Dulcich
If healthy, Greg Dulcich can be a nightmare for defensive coordinators as a tight end. Injuries have limited him though; last year he played only two games due to a hamstring injury and now has a foot issue.
His third NFL season depends on staying healthy. Dulcich has elite speed for his position which can open up passing lanes for Denver’s offense. While not great at blocking, he makes up for it with his ability as a downfield threat.
Although Adam Trautman is ahead of him on the depth chart, Dulcich is more dynamic athletically. Payton likes using tight ends who can stretch defenses vertically so both Trautman and Dulcich might see playing time together.
Broncos fans may be tired of waiting for Dulcich due to his injury history but it’s too early to give up on such talent.
