The Minnesota Vikings have a new quarterback, Sam Darnold, for the 2024 season. They also picked JJ McCarthy in the NFL Draft.
Darnold is seen as a temporary solution.
In his first game with the Vikings, Darnold completed just 4 of 8 passes for 59 yards. McCarthy, however, showed why he was drafted by completing 11 of 17 passes for 188 yards and two touchdowns. Despite an interception, McCarthy’s performance was promising.
Coach Kevin O’Connell emphasized the importance of McCarthy’s development during training camp. He mentioned that upcoming joint practices with the Cleveland Browns would be crucial for both players to showcase their skills away from the spotlight.
Practice will determine who starts, and while Darnold is favored, he must perform well this week. McCarthy was happy with his performance but stayed grounded, appreciating the chance to bounce back after an early mistake.
“In this league, things are going to go bad,” McCarthy said. “It’s your ability to respond and navigate those waters when it does happen.”
McCarthy’s progress has been faster than expected. He’s quickly applying feedback from coaches and learning at a rapid pace.
Darnold should watch out.
McCarthy’s journey is just beginning, yet he’s already making waves in Minnesota.
