A homeless man in New Zealand was stunned to discover he had some newfound wealth after placing a small wager on a horse race.
The man who only has been identified as Robert placed a $3 wager on the Melbourne Cup.
When he returned to his account, he noticed there were a lot more zeroes than he was used to seeing after the $3 wager won $62,712.
At first, Robert thought it was all a mistake.
“It was quite, quite an emotional process, mate,” he told the NZ Herald, via the New York Post. “I couldn’t believe it, and I thought to myself, ‘there must be something wrong here’.”
Robert watched the race with his friends at the Petone Working Men’s Club — where he had placed the wager a day earlier.
With his winnings, Robert says that he can now afford a down payment on a house and hopefully have a steady roof over his head.
“I’ve gone from being homeless, sitting in a garage to finally being able to afford a deposit on a house now,” he said.
