Week 9 of the college football season is now in the rearview mirror. Now, before everyone moves on to another week, it is time to break down the weekend that was.
The week featured upsets that will undoubtedly change the College Football Playoff discussion. As well as other playoff contenders continuing to flex their muscles.
Here are the five biggest headlines from Week 9.
5. The Dukes Of James Madison

The NCAA has long been known to have horrible rules that put programs at a disadvantage. One of those rules is going to ruin a dream season by the James Madison Dukes.
The Dukes are far away the best team in the Sun Belt Conference. After their 30-27 victory over Old Dominion on Saturday, the Dukes moved to 8-0 on the season.
This is where the NCAA comes in.
The Dukes will be unable to play in their conference championship due to a rule that prohibits teams from competing in postseason play for two years after moving up in a football subdivision. Congrats, NCAA, for putting another feather in your cap.
4. Top Dawgs Flex On Conference Foes

While Week 9 did feature some massive upsets, for the most part, the top programs took care of business. The number one team, the Georgia Bulldogs, eviscerated the Flordia Gators. Ohio State didn’t allow Wisconsin to ‘Jump Around.’ Flordia State steamrolled Wake Forest, and Washington controlled Stanford.
As the league inches closer and closer to the playoffs, it seems as if the top teams are putting on their best performances.
With only a handful of games left, each week is a fresh start for teams looking to impress the playoff committee.
3. Georgia Tech Stings North Carolina

Just three weeks ago, North Carolina saw themselves on a path to a potential College Football Playoff berth. With a top quarterback in Drake Maye and a legendary head coach in Mack Brown, the possibility of the Tar Heels making the playoffs felt like a reality.
Then the Virginia game happened.
So, how would the Tar Heels respond to their first loss of the season? By dropping their second loss. Georgia Tech earned their fourth win of the season, all but ending any dreams that UNC had for their postseason future.
The ACC’s final hope for a playoff contender rests in the hands of Florida State.
2. How ‘Bout Them Wildcats

Oregon State has been one of the more enjoyable stories of the season. The Beavers are a team that hasn’t seen much success lately. However, the 2023 season has brought a different vibe.
OSU was the No. 11 team in the country when they met Arizona on Saturday night. But Arizona didn’t care about the story the Beavers have been this season. The Wildcats pulled off the monster upset 27-24, sending the Pac-12 in more disarray.
Washington is in the driver’s seat for a spot in the Pac-12 title game. However, their future opponent is still up in the air.

The biggest moment of the weekend belongs to the Kansas Jayhawks as they proved that they belong with the top programs in the Big 12.
After a lengthy weather delay, it felt that Oklahoma was putting the game on cruise control; scoring 21 unanswered points in the second quarter. However, the Jayhawks never lost sight by putting up 21 points themselves in the second half.
It came down to a final heave from Oklahoma’s Dillon Gabriel, which sailed out of the back of the endzone, and then the party was on.
Kansas keeps their conference championship hopes alive with the monster victory.
