Miami Marlins third base coach Jody Reed was injured in a freak accident on Wednesday night in the team’s loss to the St. Louis Cardinals.
In the top of the third inning, Reed was in his position when Marlins right fielder Jesús Sánchez ripped a line drive foul ball. Unfortunately for Reed, the ball cracked him right in the leg.
It initially appeared as though Reed shook off some initial pain, but Marlins manager Skip Schumaker said after the game that an x-ray revealed Reed suffered a broken leg and he will be sidelined while he recovers.
Marlins quality control coach Griffin Benedict replaced the injured Reed.
Reed, a former MLB player who hit .270 with 27 homes and 392 RBIs in his 11-year career, managed in the minor leagues for the New York Yankees and Los Angeles Dodgers before making the move to Miami.
The Marlins currently sit in third place in the NL East at 53-45. They are 2-8 in their last 10.
Up next for Miami is a three-game home series against the Colorado Rockies which begins on Friday, July 21 at 6:40 p.m. ET.
