An incoming member of the Ohio State football program is facing an unthinkable tragedy. Five-star wide receiver Carnell Tate learned over the weekend that his mother, Ashley Griggs, was tragically killed in a drive-by shooting in Chicago.
She was just 40 years old.
Four others were injured in the shooting — which happened around 2:00 a.m. local time — and are in fair condition. They range in age from 39 to 42. Griggs was shot “multiple times” and ultimately succumbed to her injuries at a nearby hospital, according to TMZ.
Ohio State issued a statement saying they will offer support to Tate in any way they can while he deals with the unthinkable tragedy.
“We can confirm this was Carnell’s mother,” a statement from the university read. “Our coach and coaches are aware of this terrible tragedy, incredibly saddened and they, along with our players, will support Carnell in any way they can during this most difficult time.”
Tate, who committed to Ohio State in December, had moved from Chicago to Florida to play for IMG Academy.
He was the No. 22-ranked player in the country, according to 247 Sports. Tate was also ranked as the No. 3 wide receiver in the country and the No. 6 player in the state of Florida.
Our deepest condolences go out to Tate during this incredibly difficult and tragic time.
The Ohio State Buckeyes are set to open its 2023 campaign on September 2 on the road against the Indiana Hoosiers.
