The Northwestern football program will need to work fast to find a new head coach for the 2023 college football season after parting ways with longtime head coach Pat Fitzgerald earlier this week.

It was a controversial move that left many players upset, but one thing that could smooth things over is the addition of a big-name coach.

Enter Ed Orgeron.

Orgeron, who led the LSU Tigers to the 2019 College Football Playoff National Championship, would reportedly “have interest” in the job opening a source told InsideNU.com. Orgeron coming to Evanston would make some major waves, but the school has yet to reach out to him, per the report.

The 61-year-old Orgeron has not coached since being fired by LSU in 2021.

Orgeron played one year at LSU before transferring to Northwestern State to finish out his college career as a defensive lineman. He later began his coaching career at Northwestern State as a graduate assistant.

He would go on to have positional coaching jobs at Miami, Nicholls State, Syracuse, USC, Tennessee, and with the New Orleans States. Orgeron served as a head coach at Ole Miss and LSU.

Throughout his coaching career, Orgeron has a 67-47 head coaching record including a 4-1 mark in bowl games and a 2-0 mark in the College Football Playoff.

Hiring Orgeron would certainly make a splash, but is Northwestern up for the big move? Only time will tell.
