Georgia football coach Kirby Smart has issued a statement on Jalen Carter’s current legal situation.
On Wednesday, the potential No. 1 overall pick was scheduled to speak with the media at the 2023 NFL Scouting Combine at Lucas Oil Stadium in Indianapolis, but news broke that an arrest warrant was issued for his arrest in Athens and the press conference was scrapped.
Carter’s arrest warrant was in connection to the deadly crash that claimed the lives of Bulldogs offensive lineman Devin Willock, 20, and recruiting analyst Chandler LeCroy, 24. Racing was determined to be a factor in the crash and Carter will face charges of reckless driving and racing. There is no word on whether he will face additional charges.
The vehicles driven by the 21-year-old Carter and LeCroy reportedly topped 100 mph.
After the developments, Smart issued a statement on the “deeply concerning” developments and said that the program will fully cooperate with authorities in the ongoing investigation.

“The charges announced today are deeply concerning, especially as we are still struggling to cope with the devastating loss of two beloved members of our community,” read Smart’s statement. “We will continue to cooperate fully with authorities while supporting these families and assessing what we can learn from this horrible tragedy.”
A toxicology report determined LeCroy had a blood alcohol concentration of .197 at the time of the crash which is more than twice the legal limit. Carter remained at the scene of the deadly crash.
