Former Virginia basketball coach Terry Holland has passed away at age 80.

According to a report from the Richmond Times-Dispatch, Holland passed away on Sunday in Charlottesville after a battle with Alzheimer’s disease. Holland was diagnosed in 2019 and had recently entered the memory care center of the seniors’ community where he lived with his wife Ann.

Holland had also served as an assistant coach and head coach at Davidson before joining the Cavaliers. He left coaching in 1990 to return to his alma mater Davidson as athletic director at 47 years old. He return to the University of Virginia in 1994 as the AD.

“He was a visionary, a positive coach,” Bobby Stokes, Holland’s physician and former team captain, said. “He made it his mission to make it like a family. He cared about you off the basketball court and helped you grow along the way.”

Holland compiled a record of 418-216 as a head coach, leading Virginia to two Final Four appearances, 9 NCAA Tournament appearances, and the program’s first ACC tournament championship.

Our deepest condolences go out to Holland’s family and friends during this difficult time.
