Boston Celtics’ 2022 City Edition Uniforms Brilliantly Honor Bill Russell (PHOTOS)

The Boston Celtics‘ new “City Edition” uniforms for the 2022-23 NBA season have been unveiled, and they pay tribute to the legendary Bill Russell. The Celtics will wear the uniforms to kick off their upcoming campaign when they face the Philadelphia 76ers in the season opener.

Russell had his No. 6 retired across the NBA earlier this year following the news of his passing.

The City Edition uniforms are covered in tributes to Russell, but they may not immediately catch your eye. The Celtics wordmark on the front of the jersey is written in script inspired by the historical Slade’s Bar & Grill which was owned by Russell in the 1960s. The black trim on the jerseys features the Celtics’ signature parquet floor pattern.

And, of course, Russell’s No. 6 is on the shorts.

Throughout his illustrious career, Russell won 11 NBA championships, five NBA Most Valuable Player awards, earned 12 NBA All-Star selections, and All-NBA Team honors 11 times.

In addition to his success on the court, Russell was a civil rights pioneer, marched with Martin Luther King Jr., and earned the 2010 Presidential Medal of Freedom for his athletic achievements and lifelong commitment to social justice.
