A longtime Detroit Red Wings Zamboni driver is suing the team’s parent company, Olympia Entertainment, and claiming age and disability discrimination after he was fired for peeing in a drain.
According to the Detroit Free Press, Al Sobotka says he has the medical condition benign prostatic hyperplasia which causes an uncontrollable need to urinate.
The 68-year-old had been with the team for 51 years.
Sobotka says he was “crushed” by being fired two weeks after he was caught urinating between two Zambonis by a fellow employee.
“I am crushed,” Sobotka told WDIV-TV. “It’s like a bomb dropped on you that — every morning you get up, you have nowhere to go now. … Now I just mope around the house. I’m getting tired of watching TV.
“I took a sleeping pill from my wife. She has a condition. I couldn’t sleep with that either.”
Sobotka says he is embarrassed for the incident which led to his firing, but would happily rejoin the Red Wings family if they were open to giving him his job back.
