SportsCenter Tweets Out ‘Euphoria’ Meme & It Spectacularly Backfired

The ESPN SportsCenter Twitter account is having a rough day.

In an attempt to capitalize on the popularity of the hit HBO series Euphoria, SportsCenter sent out a tweet of an image from the finale.

The tweet featured an image of the popular character Ashtray, a 13-year-old played by actor Javon Walton, with the caption “Name an athlete as fearless as this guy.”

In a matter of minutes, accounts began trolling SportsCenter so badly that the tweet was deleted.

Now, we won’t get into any spoilers from the show, but let’s just say that the responses to ESPN led to Aaron Hernandez and OJ Simpson trending on social media.

Did the tweet get engagement? Yes. Was it what ESPN was hoping for? Absolutely not.

After the deleted tweet continued to go viral, ESPN released a statement on the tweet to the New York Post.

“The content posted was not in alignment with ESPN’s brand and we removed it,” the statement read.

Let this be a reminder that trying to capitalize on a trendy show or meme is almost always going to backfire when it’s clear you’re just using it in an attempt to fit in with the younger audience.
