NFL legend Joe Theismann appeared to reveal the new name for the Washington Football Team during an interview with CBS Sports Radio on Monday.
Theismann said fans will likely embrace the new name, the Washington Commanders.
Theismann’s comments come after internet sleuths appeared to connect the dots that a domain name for the Commanders has been transferred to a company that protects brands from hackers.
“I think the Commanders is a name that is going to be one that hopefully people like going forward,” Theismann told Damon Amendolara, via the New York Post. “There were so many different options, but once again it’s trademark infringement — it’s getting approval from different people. If you choose a name, is there a group out there that isn’t going to like it?

“… A lot of commanders in Washington D.C. and the Pentagon, and a lot of different branches of the service. So to me, that’s the way I’m looking at it, as positions of leadership when it comes to the new name.”
An official announcement is expected on Wednesday.
After Theismann’s comments went viral, he backtracked and said that he was not sure what the new team name would be.
“Not completely sure what the new name [is],” Theismann told the Washington Post. “No one has told me. Like you I’ll find out on Wednesday.”
