A wild story is surfacing involving two women’s soccer players for the French club Paris Saint-Germain. Per reports, Aminata Diallo was arrested in connection to an attack on teammate Kheira Hamraoui.
The two players were in a car leaving a team dinner when a group of masked men dropped them out of the vehicle. Hamroui had her legs and hands beaten with metal bars which prevented her from playing against Real Madrid in the Champions League on Tuesday night. With Hamraoui injured, Diallo got the start.
Now, Diallo has been arrested.
Per French newspaper L’Equipe, Diallo is suspected of hiring the masked men to injure her teammate so she could be in the starting lineup. Paris Saint-Germain defeated Real Madrid, 4-0.
“Paris Saint-Germain acknowledges that Aminata Diallo was remanded in police custody this morning by the Versailles SRPJ as part of the proceedings initiated following an assault last Thursday evening against the club’s players,” a statement from the club read.
“Paris Saint-Germain condemns in the strongest possible terms the violence committed. Since the evening of Thursday, Nov. 4, the club has taken all the necessary measures to guarantee the health, well-being and safety of its players. PSG is working closely with the Versailles SRPJ to shed light on the facts. The club is paying close attention to the progress of the proceedings and will study what action to take.”
The good news for Hamraoui, meanwhile, is that the injuries are non-career threatening and she will be able to the starting lineup once she is fully healed from the attack.
The attackers remain on the loose.
When news of the attack surfaced on social media, Twitter immediately began comparing the situation to Tonya Harding, who infamously had her rival, Nancy Kerrigan, attacked before a figure skating competition. You can check out some of the reactions below.

Loving that Tonya Harding is trending basically because no one can be arsed to try and spell Kheira Hamraoui and/or Aminata Diallo.
