As the college football season rolls on, the Maxwell Football Club continues to announce its weekly honors. Following Week 9 of the 2021 campaign, the Maxwell Football Club announced its latest Maxwell Award Player of the Week and Bednarik Award Player of the Week.
The Maxwell Award Player of the Week will be recognized for overall performance on offense, defense, or special teams. The Chuck Bednarik Award Player of the Week, meanwhile, will be honored for outstanding defensive play.
This week’s Maxwell Award Player of the Week went to Wake Forest quarterback Sam Hartman, who threw for 458 yards and five touchdowns — along with an additional score on the ground — in the Demon Deacons’ wild 70-56 win over Army.
Defensively, Oregon star and potential No. 1 overall NFL draft pick Kayvon Thibodeaux picked up honors after recording nine tackles, a career-high 4.5 stops for loss, two sacks and a forced fumble in the Bruins’ big win over UCLA.
Additional information on the Week 9 Player of the Week winners can be seen below.
Maxwell Award Player of the Week: QB Sam Hartman, Wake Forest
Six touchdowns… six incompletions… against the nation’s No. 6 defense. Hartman is piling up prolific performances for the undefeated Demon Deacons this fall. Wake Forest erupted on Army, 70-56, for the program’s most points in a game since 1940. Hartman completed 23-of-29 for 458 yards and five TD passes, three to star WR Jaquarii Roberson. Hartman also scrambled for 22 yards and another score to help keep the Deacons atop the ACC Atlantic Division.
Bednarik Award Player of the Week: OLB Kayvon Thibodeaux, Oregon
After missing time with an ankle injury, Thibodeaux is close to full strength. And ready to show off his power, athleticism and technique for NFL scouts in the second half of the season. Thibodeaux has been dominant of late, racking up 10 pressures in each of the last two games, according to Pro Football Focus. In Saturday’s showdown at UCLA, he was a monster off the edge with nine tackles, a career-high 4.5 stops for loss, two sacks and a forced fumble.
