As the college football season rolls on, the Maxwell Football Club continues to announce its weekly honors. Following Week 7 of the 2021 campaign, the Maxwell Football Club announced its latest Maxwell Award Player of the Week and Bednarik Award Player of the Week.

The Maxwell Award Player of the Week will be recognized for overall performance on offense, defense, or special teams. The Chuck Bednarik Award Player of the Week, meanwhile, will be honored for outstanding defensive play.

This week’s Maxwell Award Player of the Week went to Texas A&M quarterback Zach Calzada, who threw for three scores and 285 yards in the Aggies’ stunning upset of Alabama.

Defensively, Air Force linebacker Vince Sanford picked up the honor. Sanford filled up the stat sheet in the Falcons’ win over Wyoming with six tackles, 1.5 stops for loss, a sack, two forced fumbles, a broken-up pass, and a fumble recovery.

Additional information on the Week 7 Player of the Week winners can be seen below.

Maxwell Award Player of the Week: QB Zach Calzada, Texas A&M

A lot of long streaks fell Saturday night at Kyle Field. Calzada was a key reason why. The Aggies shocked top-ranked Alabama, 41-38, and snapped the nation’s longest winning streak behind a gutsy effort from their sophomore quarterback. Calzada, who was looking to rebound entering Week 6, threw for three scores and 285 yards in the upset. And he led the offense down the field in the waning moments for the game-winning drive on a banged-up knee.

Bednarik Award Player of the Week: LB Vince Sanford, Air Force

Sanford is having an outstanding October so far, flying around the field like he’s on his way to becoming an All-Mountain West performer. The 6-1, 210-pound playmaker from Ohio contributes to all phases of an Air Force D allowing just 16.2 points per game. In Saturday’s 24-14 defeat of Wyoming, Sanford notched six tackles, 1.5 stops for loss, a sack, two forced fumbles and a fumble recovery. He also broke up a pass, en route to earning the second highest grade from Pro Football Focus among all Week 6 defenders.
