JR Smith’s first NCAA golf tournament has been a wild one.

The two-time NBA champion started off hot with two birdies in the first five holes at the Elon Phoenix Invitational at the Alamance Country Club in Burlington, North Carolina. Unfortunately for Smith, who plays for North Carolina A&T, would end the day with seven bogeys and a double bogey.

Then, on Tuesday, Smith sailed the ball into the woods on the 12th hole. While he was searching for his ball, the 38-year-old stepped into a beehive and required medical attention.

Smith went on to finish the hole with a double bogey and is in the process of finishing his first NCAA golf tournament. Currently, Smith is 81st place. But hey, he’s out there having fun and that’s what matters.

Back in August, Smith revealed he enrolled at the HBCU and had aspirations of playing for the Aggies. Now, he can officially give it a go.

“It was probably one of the most exciting feelings I’ve had in a while. I really didn’t know how it was going to go. … but to be able to actually call myself a student-athlete is a great feeling,” Smith said, via The Undefeated.

Let’s hope JR continues to fine-tune his game while living out his dream of being a college athlete.
