Tuesday night, the 2021 MLB Playoffs opened up as the Boston Red Sox defeated the New York Yankees, 6-2. Boston’s energy would not be matched as the Red Sox faithful were welcomed back to Fenway Park in full capacity for the Wild Card matchup.

The Yankees will finish the 2021 season empty-handed yet again; leaving many to believe this was the final time manager Aaron Boone will be seen in the New York dugout.

Here’s how the Red Sox took home the AL Wild Card spot.

The action started early for the Red Sox as Xander Bogaerts took the Yankees 300-million dollar man Gerrit Cole deep in the bottom of the first. The Red Sox never looked back after this moment. Cole continued his woeful performances at Fenway Park, leaving the game after 2 IP, 4 H, and 3 ER.

Cole told reporters after the game that he was “sick to his stomach.” about his performance in such a meaningful game.

On the other side, Nathan Eovaldi looked every bit of the dominant pitcher the Yankees hoped to see out of Cole. Eovaldi finished his night with 5.1 IP, 4 H, 1 ER, and 8 SO. Red Sox fans worried that manager Alex Cora had taken Eovaldi out too soon. However, the Boston bullpen pulled together a 2 H, 1 ER performance.

Last night’s celebration looked World Series worthy, but there is still a mountain to climb for the Red Sox to reach the pinnacle. On Thursday, Boston will take on AL East champions, the Tampa Bay Rays, to start the ALDS. The Red Sox were 8-11 against the Rays in the regular season.
