Conor McGregor suffered his second consecutive loss to Dustin Poirier at UFC 264 on Saturday night.

McGregor had some strong moments in the opening round of the pay-per-view main event, but when the fight hit the mat it was Poirier who began asserting his dominance with some heavy ground-and-pound.

With seconds remaining in the opening frame, both men returned to their feet when McGregor suffered a gruesome lower leg injury which forced doctors to stop the bout between rounds.

McGregor was stretchered out of the arena and immediately taken to the local hospital.

Following the event, UFC president Dana White provided an update on the former two-division champ, saying McGregor will undergo surgery on Sunday morning. White also relayed the injury that McGregor suffered, which was not to the ankle like some had initially believed.

UFC chief business officer Hunter Campbell told White that McGregor suffered a fracture of the lower tibia; right about the shin, according to MMAjunkie.com.

The injury will require significant surgery and an exact recovery time is unknown. If there is any silver lining, it is that McGregor suffered a closed fracture and the bone did not pierce his skin.

We wish McGregor a full and speedy recovery as he makes his way back from surgery and eyes an eventual return to the cage.
