Former Dallas Mavericks head coach Rick Carlisle gave a glowing endorsement of Jason Kidd, who is expected to replace him as the team’s next head coach.

Carlisle accepted the Indiana Pacers head coaching job after parting ways with the Mavericks, before sharing his thoughts on why Kidd would be a great fit on the Dallas bench.

“My hope is that Jason Kidd will be the next coach of the Mavs because he and Luka have so many things in common as players,” Carlisle told ESPN. “I just think that it would be a great situation for Luka, and I think it would be an amazing situation for Jason.

“I’m the only person on the planet that’s coached both of those guys and that knows about all of their special qualities as basketball players. To me, that just would be a great marriage, but that’s just an opinion.”

The 48-year-old Kidd played two seasons for the Mavericks before he was traded to the Phoenix Suns. Kidd would return to the team in 2007 en route to helping the team win the 2011 NBA Championship.

Since his playing career, Kidd has served as head coach of the Brooklyn Nets and Milwaukee Bucks.

Most recently, Kidd has spent the last two seasons as an assistant for the Los Angeles Lakers.
