FIFA has delivered punishment to the Mexican soccer federation due to homophobic chants from its fans.
As a result of the chants, Mexico will have to play two upcoming World Cup qualifying matches without fans. The federation has also been fined approximately $65,000.
The chants were made during multiple games in March.
“The committee has also opened separate proceedings against the FMF in relation to homophobic chants by Mexican fans at their team’s friendly match against Iceland played in Arlington, Texas, on 29 May 2021,” FIFA said in a statement.
