Along with swapping first-round picks, the 49ers are sending a 2021 third-round pick, and first-round picks in 2022 and 2023 to the Dolphins.
It became immediately clear that the 49ers made the move to target a top quarterback prospect, but was it for Zach Wilson, Justin Fields, Trey Lance, or Mac Jones?
According to former NFL general manager Mike Tannenbaum, the 49ers are eyeing the Alabama Crimson Tide star.
Tannenbaum made his comments on ESPN SportsCenter on Monday morning.
“Absolutely, I think Mac Jones will be the third pick in the draft,” Tannenbaum said, as transcribed by 247 Sports. “I think he is a perfect fit for Kyle Shanahan and that offense. He compares very closely to Matt Ryan. As we remember, Matt Ryan had a ton of success with Kyle Shanahan in Atlanta.
“Mac Jones is really good under center, play-action. He is a quick decision-maker, which is really important with Kyle Shanahan. He has really good accuracy, and I think the one part about his game is he’s a better athlete than people give him credit for. He has some athleticism, and I think that will play really well in Kyle Shanahan’s system.”
If Jones does go at No. 3, it would be earlier than many had anticipated. Many had projected Jones as a mid-first-round pick with the New England Patriots as a potential landing spot.
However, it looks like the 49ers may have other plans.
The 86th annual NFL Draft will be held across three days from April 29 to May 1.
This year’s draft will be held in Cleveland, Ohio, incorporating FirstEnergy Stadium, the Rock ‘n Roll Hall of Fame, and the Great Lakes Science Center.
