Watson Chapel Junior High School in Pine Bluff, Arkansas returned to in-person learning this week.
Unfortunately, on the first day returning to class since the coronavirus lockdown, a student was shot and seriously injured. According to KARK-TV, a second student is in police custody.
The student who was shot was transferred to Arkansas Children’s Hospital by helicopter.
The school addressed the incident on social media saying that all campuses were placed on lockdown as the Pine Bluff Police Department and Jefferson County Sheriff’s Department got the situation under control.
“There has been a shooting at the Watson Chapel Junior High,” the school district said on Facebook. “ALL campuses are on lockdown. The Jefferson County Sheriff’s Department and Pine Bluff Police Department are on site to control the situation.
“This was an isolated incident and all students are safe at this time. The parent of the student hurt has been notified so if you have not been notified by the school your student is safe and secure. The police are not letting anyone in and out of the buildings. You will not be allowed to come get your student at this time.”
