Could recreational weed finally be coming to New York? Well, if you want to believe Governor Andrew Cuomo then it is only a matter of time.
Gov. Cuomo was speaking this weekend when he revealed his team will be working on legalizing marijuana in the state as part of his 2021 agenda. The COVID-19 pandemic has played a part in the plan to find new ways to generate revenue for the struggling state.
“We will legalize adult-use recreational cannabis, joining 15 states that have already done so,” Gov. Cuomo said. “This will raise revenue and end the failed prohibition of this product that has left so many communities of color over-policed and over-incarcerated.
“Those, my friends, are the immediate issues for our focus: crushing COVID and the short-term economic consequences for our state.”
Gov. Cuomo has also said that he will be proposing state-sponsored mobile sports betting to raise additional revenue in New York. These are all moves that seem long overdue in the progressive state.
As for what will be a part of Cuomo’s marijuana legalization proposal, marijuana and weed-related products will not be sold to anyone under the age of 2021.
This seems like a plan that we can all get behind.
