Spending months in quarantine throughout this pandemic certainly isn’t easy or good for one’s mental health. There are a variety of steps one can take to help improve their physical and mental well-being while staying quarantined and practicing social distancing. With that in mind, here are five productive ways one could productively spend their time while in quarantine.

1. Start a workout routine

Getting yourself on a home workout routine is a great way to stay active and improve your physical/mental health. It helps if you already have weights or workout equipment available at home but it certainly isn’t necessary. All you need to do is follow some of the workout videos available on YouTube in order to start getting into a daily routine. If YouTube workout videos don’t sound very appealing, another great way to stay in shape as part of a workout routine is to go on regular runs, walks or bike rides around your neighborhood.

2. Keep a blog or journal

Keeping track of your thoughts, feelings and activities throughout the day is always a good idea. This is a good way to measure both your daily productivity and mental health. This allows you to monitor and process your thoughts and memories for previous days and weeks throughout quarantine. This journal could be kept privately on a computer, on a mobile device or in a notebook. You could even set up a personal blog and turn your daily thoughts and experiences into periodic posts for others to read and learn from. Regardless, writing either for yourself or for an audience is always time well spent.

3. Learning a new skill

Finding a new hobby or learning a new skill is always a productive and healthy way for one to spend their time. This could include learning a new game, playing an instrument or building something with your hands. Learning a new skill is a great way to keep yourself entertained while enriching your mind. There are plenty of tutorials online for games, instruments and other skills for one to learn how to master from the comfort of their home. Choose something that you’ve always wanted to learn how to do and give it a try, don’t be afraid of failure.

4. Read a book

Reading a book is a great way to entertain yourself while keeping your mind active. Immersing oneself into a book, its characters and its storyline is certainly a productive use of time. Reading exercises the brain, builds vocabularies, lowers stress and enhances the imagination. Reading books is a great way of keeping your mind and intellect sharp while feeling a sense of accomplishment after completing one. Many books can be bought used for cheap on Amazon or rented through your local library so there is literally no excuse to not start reading. If you prefer audio over reading, listening to audiobooks is a great way to go as well.

5. Keep in touch with friends or family

One of the worst things that can affect one’s mental health is a feeling of isolation from friends and family. This is especially the case if you are living on your own throughout the COVID-19 pandemic. Fortunately, there are now plenty of more ways to stay connected with others than before. Find time to catch up with and have a virtual drink with friends or family. If your friends or family live in town, then organize socially distanced outdoor gatherings in order to feel less isolated during this time. Additionally, you can use this time to check in with relatives or old friends you haven’t spoken to in a while. Spending quality time with those you care about the most is the most important and productive way to improve your mental health throughout these uncertain times.
