California high school wrestler Brett Winters from Pacific High School had his specially made prosthetic ‘wrestling’ legs taken — one was found – from a gym and his mother is asking for any information to help find the missing leg that allows Brett to participate in the sport.
From Brett’s mother, Holly Winters, via Facebook:
My son Brett Winters attends Pacific high school. This is his senior year. He has been on the varsity wrestling team since freshman year. My son Brett Winters is the only bilateral above the knee amputee at Pacific High School. And his wrestling legs were stolen out of the gym on Wednesday. His legs were there on Tuesday, a teacher and the wrestling team saw his legs on Tuesday. These legs were specially made for Brett his freshman year, with the same material that wrestling shoes are made of . They were made specially for the mats and only the mats . My son Brett can’t even practice correctly without his wrestling legs. He has to practice at this time with nothing on his legs to protect them. Very uncomfortable for him.
Brett’s missing leg still hadn’t turned up as of Sunday, according to ABC-6:
Brett uses different pairs of prosthetic legs, depending on his activity. Recently, the legs he wears for wrestling disappeared from a Pacific High School gym closet.
“Right now, practicing? It hurts to even practice,” Winters said.
One of the legs has since turned up, but the other is still missing. The San Bernardino City Unified School District has offered to replace the prosthetic legs, but it is a long process and they may not arrive before the season and Brett’s wrestling career come to an end.
Here’s Brett on Facebook pretty distraught about all this:
